RECUPERATION EXAM

For those of you who need to take the sociology recuperation exam, here are some hints to help you do well.

1. Study the PowerPoints! Everything that comes on the test is from the powerpoints. If you understand the powerpoints, you will do fine. But that means more than just reading it, but understanding it conceptually.

2. Understand the vocabulary. The vocabulary part will be the same as it was on the final, only different sentences. Please study that vocabulary, otherwise, you will not pass. You can find the words on one of the previous messages.

3. Look at the previous messages to see what you need to study. Again, learn what is the nature vs. nurture argument please.

4. Be able to look at pictures and say how they show the male or female stereotype and how they conform to white male patriarchy (Hint: You will have to do this on your exam!)

5. The format for the test is close to the same as the final you just took:

Section A. Vocabulary (21 points)

Section B. Dominant Culture, Gender, Socialization (28 points)

Part 1. True or False
Part 2. Conform or Defy
Part 3. Short Answers

Section C. Stereotypes (51 points)

Part 1. Multiple Choice (26 points)
Part 2. True or False (10 points)
Part 3. Short Answers (15 points)

Any questions?

Mr. Isaac.

Suerte!

Mr. Isaac.

FINAL

Hey 11th Grade!

So for you final, this is how the points are divided up:

Section A. Vocabulary (21 points)

Section B. Dominant culture, Gender, Socialization (23 points)

Section C. Stereotypes (56 points)

For Section A, I am giving you a word bank of words and you have to fill in the blanks. Here are the words:

Dominant Culture

Social Controls

Socialization

Social Constructs

Norms

Objectified

Negative Sanction

Positive sanction

Conform

Defy

Gender identity

Gender Roles

Sexual Orientation

Patriarchy

White male patriarchy

Media

Stereotype

Masculine

Feminine

Female

Male

For Section B, there are three sections. I decided NOT to put the section about sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender role on the exam, so while you have to know what each one is, that section you had on your quiz will NOT be on the final exam.

For Section C, stereotypes, you will have a multiple choice section, you will have to know the powerpoints and the stereotypes we have gone over. There are a couple of questions that ask you to think about other stereotypes, so in that case, you need to figure out if the person identified is a minority and thus what the stereotype might be.

Lastly, here are the powerpoints you are responsible for:

1) Dominant Culture, Gender, and Socialization

2) Social Constructionism

3) Stereotypes (important: Know the statistics on this powerpoint!)

Any questions, guys?

Mr. Isaac.

QUIZ ANSWERS

Hello grade 11,

So here are some of the answers from the quiz that many of you got wrong. I am giving you these answers so that you are prepared for the exam.

Part 3. Multiple Choice

1. The three most influential way you are socialized to learn your gender are
d. Family, peers, and media

6. A social construct is
a. A social category created and developed by society that sorts its members into different life experiences.
(remember, everything we are dealing with in terms of stereotypes comes from two social constructs, gender and race.)

Part 4. Gender role, gender identity, and sexual orientation.

1. Heterosexual = Sexual Orientation
2. A woman's preference for wearing make-up = Gender identity (because it is one woman's preference)
3. Little girl watching her mom cook = Gender role (because she is being socialized)
4. Showing interest in the opposite sex = Sexual Orientation
5. A boy interested in playing with doll house = Gender identity (because it is one boy's preference)
6. Hearing it is normal for men to hold hand with other men = Gender Roles (because they are norms for a culture)

A PART OF YOUR FINAL EXAM WILL LOOK EXACTLY LIKE PART 4 ABOVE!

Part 5. Short Answer

3. What are two types of social controls? How do they control society?

a. Socialization = We learn the proper behavior for our group through peers, family, and media. By learning the norms through socialization, we often believe them and abide by them.

b. Norms = Norms tell us what is appropriate and inappropriate behavior, thereby controlling it because we often want to be appropriate and not inappropriate. We will know we are either appropriate or inappropriate depending on the sanction we receive from others.

4. How are females and males socialized differently?

Females are socialized by learning what is feminine while males are socialized by learning what is masculine in their culture. For instance, if women typically are subservient to men, then girls will learn how to serve men. If males are typically aggressive in conversation, then boys will learn to how to speak aggressively.

5. What is the nature vs. nurture argument in sociology?

The nature vs. nurture argument attempts to answer the question of how differences in behavior (in this case between females and males) exist in our society. Nature says that biology is responsible for these differences. while nurture says that our society creates these differences through social control, like socialization and norms.

Any questions? I will send you how the points are divided up later today!

Homework will be up tomorrow.

Hey guys,

I will get you the homework tomorrow. There are five parts to it. The only reason I did not upload it today is because my post did not save and my computer froze. Therefore only half of the homework is saved. I will write the rest tomorrow. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Take care.

Mr. Isaac.

Tarea

Hey 11th Grade,

So for next Monday, this is what I would like you guys to do.

We have been talking about stereotypes, or the assumptions we make about people, regardless of if they are true or not. The assumptions come from a concept or idea about the group we believe they belong to. So, for instance, when we talk about a woman, we often think of that woman as being part of the female group and thus a list of assumptions of what women are like comes out of our head. So when a woman acts like a stereotypical feminine woman, she is acting according to her gender role, which is being passive, gentle, nurturing, and emotional. She shows little signs of being independent, assertive, and powerful. If she were independent, assertive, and powerful she might suprise us because she is acting out of the female stereotype. Get it?

So, hopefully that reminds you about what we are learning. Now, here is your homework. On the powerpoint about stereotypes, there are a list of stereotypical behavior (the slide of "feminine stereotypes" and "masculine stereotypes"). Using that slide and thinking of stereotypes for female and male behavior (which, remember, are also part of their gender roles) please do the following:

Exercise 1. Find a magazine cover of a male, female, or of both sexes. Using the list of feminine of masculine stereotypes, explain if they are behaving or positioning is in a stereotypical way or not. Be specific in your explanation. Please write this in your notebook AND bring in the magazine.

Exercise 2. Find a song/movie that talks about a relationship between a male and a female. Look at the lyrics and explain, in your notebook, how the behavior between the sexes is either stereotypical or not. Write this in your notebook AND bring in the lyrics as well. (The song can be in Spanish!)

Exercise 3. Below are 5 people. With each one, please write THE FIRST DESCRIPTIONS THAT COME TO MIND when you think about these people. Whether you like the descriptions or not is not important. In order for this to work effectively, you must be honest and write down what first pops into your head. Please write them in your notebook and include at least 4 descriptive words/phrases for each one.

a. Police officer
b. Rapper (like 50 cent or Eminem)
c. Indigenous person
d. Gringo
e. Shumo
f. Mexican man

4. After doing exercise 3, look at your first thoughts about each person. Pick a few, NOT ALL, of your descriptions and answer the following questions in TWO paragraphs in your notebook. The first paragraph is for part a. and the second paragraph is for part b.

a. Do you think these are stereotypical descriptions of the people and the group you feel they belong to? If so, why do you think they are stereotypical description. ? Or do you think your descriptions are not stereotypical? Why do you think that?

b. Do you feel that your first thoughts for each person carries positive or negative consequences? What do you feel the consequences could be with your first thoughts?

THIS IS DUE on MONDAY, OCTOBER 24th. On that Monday, I will also be giving you your review packet that will count as a quiz.

Any questions? Si tienes dudas sobre lo que tienes que hacer para la tarea, puedes pedir ayuda de otro alumno o me puedes enviar un email, ihunnewell@campussur.uvg.edu.gt.

Have a wonderful feriado!

Mr. Isaac.
